Skype’s Legacy and Its Final Chapter

Skype, founded in 2003, revolutionized communication by offering free voice and video calls over the internet. It was the first service of its kind and quickly became a household name. However, after more than 20 years, Skype has officially shut down.

The Rise and Fall of Skype

Skype was once the go-to app for voice and video calls. In 2011, Microsoft acquired Skype for $8.5 billion, hoping to leverage its popularity to enhance its online services. Skype was everywhere—its ringtone became iconic, and “skyping” became as common a term as”Googlin” or” Facebooking.” It was deeply integrated into Microsoft’s products, including Windows, Xbox, and Outlook.

However, Skype’s dominance didn’t last. New competitors such as WhatsApp, Zoom, and FaceTime emerged, offering faster and more user-friendly alternatives. Despite efforts to keep Skype relevant by integrating it into Microsoft’s ecosystem, the platform struggled to keep pace with evolving technology and user expectations. In 2017, Microsoft shifted its focus by replacing Skype for Business with Teams, signaling a significant transition.

By 2020, Skype had only 40 million daily users, while Microsoft Teams had skyrocketed to 320 million monthly users by the end of 2023. Once the leader in video calls, Skype was now overtaken by its rivals.

Goodbye Skype, Welcome the Next Generation of Communication

Microsoft has announced that Skype will officially be retired in May 2025. Instead, the company encourages users to transition to Microsoft Teams, which offers similar features, such as voice and video calls, messaging, and file sharing. Microsoft’s shift to Teams aims to simplify communication, positioning it as the primary hub for personal and professional interactions. Users can log into Teams with their Skype credentials to transfer contacts and chats or export their data if they choose not to migrate.

This move is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to streamline its services. Jeff Teper, President of Microsoft 365 Collaborative Apps & Platforms, emphasised that the company prioritises Teams as its central communication platform. While Microsoft has learned valuable lessons from Skype, the focus is now on innovating within Teams.

Skype’s Legacy Will Live On

Although Skype is shutting down, its legacy in transforming digital communication remains undeniable. For many, saying goodbye will be emotional, as it played a vital role in connecting people worldwide—from family video calls to long-distance relationships and professional meetings.

While Skype may be gone, it will never be forgotten.

DeepSeek was built for $6 million—much less than OpenAI’s GWorld. It used a mix of NVIDIA A100 and H800 chips, some of which were banned from OpenAI in China. Reports suggest its founder stockpiled up to 50,000 of these chips, helping build a powerful AI at a lower cost. In early 2025, DeepSeek’s AI Assistant became the most downloaded free app on Apple’s US App DeepSeek’sn, beating ChatGPT. Soon after, it faced cyberattacks and Apple’s temporary registration limits. Over the past few years, China’s rapid rise has prompted questions about its AI capabilities and ability to compete with US tech leader China behind Deepseek. DeepSeek was founded by Liang Wenfeng in December 2023. He is a finance and AI expert from Zhejiang University and runs High-Flyer, a successful hedge fund. Liang’s financial expertise helped him build DeepSeek’s powerful AI models, liLiang’sSeek-R1, more cost-effectively, DeepSeek’s global AI players.

DeepSeek proves that AI development doesn’t always need massive budgets and top-tier chips. Its success has shaken the world, even leading to stock price drops. Once the world’s most valuable company, NVIDIA saw its shares fall 17% before starting to recover itself. Although DeepSeek is privately owned, its rapid growth forces the AI industry to rethink how AI is built. If it keeps up this momentum, it could become a major competitor to Western tech giants and reshape AI’s future.
